The 5.5 bundle brings together their full suite including EchoBoy, Decapitator, PrimalTap, Little AlterBoy, Crystallizer, and more, covering everything from vintage tape echo and analogue saturation to total vocal transformation. Every plugin is built around specific hardware DNA, so you're reaching for character rather than just dialling in effects. The 5.5 update tightened up performance and compatibility across the board, and whether you're adding subtle warmth to a vocal, wrecking a drum bus, or building a delay-drenched atmosphere, this is a bundle that earns its place in the toolkit long-term. If you're serious about sound design, mixing, or music production, Soundtoys 5.5 is one of the few collections worth owning outright.

At Soundtoys we are more than a little obsessed with delay effects, and EchoBoy is the ultimate realization of that obsession. The sound is absolutely unmistakable, and has been used on countless records to transform simple chords into epic soundscapes. Once musicians and engineers got their hands on this unique technique, and realized how it instantly turned minimal guitar lines into shimmering symphonic textures, there was no going back. You can hear it on hundreds of records—from 80s anthems, to ambient compositions, to modern indie rock and chillwave. And now you can have it, too.

Getting the Glitch Right

Because Soundtoys’ founders actually designed algorithms for the original H3000, you can be sure we didn’t rest until we’d recreated its icy tones flawlessly. One of the key elements of the Crystallizer sound is its old school pitch shifting. Modern pitch shifters (like our own Little AlterBoy for example) use sophisticated mathematical algorithms to transform music and vocals as naturally as possible. The original old school devices (like Eventide’s classic H910 Harmonizer) used a simpler resample and crossfade technique that introduced audible artifacts in the pitch-shifted audio. This retro technique adds a glitchy character to the sound that is an essential part of Crystallizer’s 80s-futuristic charm.

Upping the Ante

Once we nailed the sound of the original effect, we didn’t stop there. There are classic auto-panners? Yep! And we tracked down these obscure boxes, like the Spanner and PanScan, to study what makes them tick. One thing we just had to run with comes from the PanScan: the trigger divider. This quirky feature lets you set the number of trigger events it takes to move to a new pan position. For example, you can set it to scan from the left to right in three triggers. Trigger the panning by clicking with your mouse, automate the trigger with your host, or even set a threshold to have it respond to incoming audio. You can even filter the audio going to the trigger so it responds to just low, or high, frequency events. And of course we didn’t stop there: we’ve added 7 different analog modes that add saturation and real analog vibe when you push PanMan hard.

Modern and Musical Tools

Like our other modulation effects, PanMan also offers advanced rhythmic tools that let you create your own signature pan effects. That’s great when you want a simple back and forth sweep. But what if you want something a bit more out there? In PhaseMistress you can choose from a multitude of creative LFO shapes that go beyond what you’ll find in hardware–and you can even draw your own curves in the Tweak panel. For cool robotic effects, try the random mode and step mode for phase shifts that jump rather than sweep. Rhythm mode lets you program your own rhythmic patterns, or choose from some great pre-made ones, too.
