The Maselec MEA-2 is Relab's officially endorsed recreation of the Maselec Precision Stereo EQ, developed in collaboration with Leif Mases. It's for mastering and mix engineers who want an EQ with real musical character rather than textbook curves.
Hand-tuned curves
The MEA-2's bandwidth curves are hand-tuned and asymmetrical rather than generated from standard equations, and that's a big part of why it sounds the way it does. Relab worked from a custom-built, one-of-a-kind unit supplied by Leif Mases himself.
Broad, smooth shelving
The shelves span a wider range than most, so changes blend in without obvious corners. Highs open up and shimmer without getting piercing, and lows deepen without muddying.
Mid/side on every band
The plugin adds something the hardware never had: Mid/Side mode on each band, plus solo and link features. You can brighten the sides without touching a centred vocal, or tighten the low end in the middle only.
The sound
Smooth, refined and quietly expensive-sounding. The MEA-2 suits mastering, mix bus and broad tonal shaping on key elements. It isn't a surgical EQ for notching out problem frequencies; keep a clean digital EQ for that. It pairs with the MLA-4 in the Maselec Bundle.
