Sugar Bytes - Transfigure

Transfigure is Sugar Bytes' newest effect, a sound design processor for producers, sound designers and film and game creators who want to turn ordinary audio into something entirely new. It isn't a conventional multi-effect: the aim is a result that sounds unrelated to the original, steered by a central XY pad.

The spectral engine

This works in the frequency domain. It can freeze chosen frequencies in place, delay different bands by different amounts for smeared, evolving tails, and move particular frequency ranges around. That includes the practical as well as the strange: you can place a 100Hz kick exactly where you want it in the stereo field.

The resynthesis engine

Resynthesis listens to your input, detects the pitches in it, and generates new audio from its own internal sound engine. Results can stay close to the source or bear no resemblance to it. It supports standard and unusual scales, and works on unpitched material too, so a drum loop can come out as a melodic texture.

Effects, XY pad and modulation

Two further slots offer delay, reverb, phaser, filter with drive, capture and looper effects. Every parameter ties into the modulation section, and the XY pad moves several at once, which makes it as much a performance tool as a studio one.

The sound

Transfigure lives at the experimental end: frozen spectral pads, harmonised drums, glassy resynthesised textures and outright glitch. It's version 1.0.1, so it's young, and if you're after gentle polish this isn't the tool. For granular freezing and stutter with a more familiar feel, see Graindad.
