Cherry Audio - Pro Soloist

Pro Soloist is Cherry Audio's emulation of ARP's 1972 Pro Soloist, a preset monosynth made famous in prog rock, rebuilt as a fully programmable polyphonic synth for expressive leads, brass and woodwind tones.

The approach

The original had 30 fixed presets selected with paddles and no way to programme your own. Mark Barton (MRB) modelled the underlying circuit, and Cherry Audio then opened up every parameter: VCO with a fatter Super Wave option, 24dB/oct filter, resonant high-pass, a five-band resonator bank, envelopes, LFO and the distinctive Growl modulator. The 30 original presets are still there on the paddles.

The sound

Vocal and expressive. The resonator bank gives it a formant-like, instrument-ish quality, and the touch controls for volume, brilliance and portamento reward playing with aftertouch. Dual layers with 16 voices each, a mod matrix, arpeggiator and 12 effects take it far beyond the original's role as an organ-top add-on. Great for prog-style leads, and surprisingly good at pads too.
