Yellowjacket is Cherry Audio's tribute to the EDP Wasp, the British digital and analogue hybrid monosynth of 1978, for buzzy leads, raw basses and edgy textures in electronic, indie and experimental music.
The architecture
The Wasp paired quirky digital oscillators with an analogue filter, and a black and yellow touch keyboard you either loved or hated. Yellowjacket recreates that buzzy tone and adds a lot: unison and 16-voice polyphony, an expanded multimode filter, an emulation of the Wasp's built-in speaker and an advanced arpeggiator with probability and humanise controls. Inspired by EDP's pre-MIDI system for chaining synths together, multi-voice modes add "mini synths" for variations in tone, single-finger chords and arpeggiated patterns.
The sound
Raspy, thin in the best way and very good at cutting through the midrange. Single-voice patches have the charm of the original, while polyphony and the multi-voice modes take it somewhere the Wasp never went. The touch keyboard is recreated with diatonic scales and transpose, and channel and polyphonic aftertouch are supported. Not a warm, fat synth, and not trying to be. Over 270 presets.
