Sugar Bytes - Egoist

Egoist is Sugar Bytes' slicer groovebox, for producers who want to turn a sample, or a whole song, into a new groove with a bassline and beat in one go. It combines a 16-slice sample sequencer, a bass synth, a drum machine and an effect sequencer, which makes it a quick track-sketching tool in the studio or on a laptop.

The slicer

Load a WAV, AIFF or MP3 and Egoist chops it into slices you can rearrange across up to 16 steps. Each slice has its own pitch, direction, attack, decay and volume, so even one repeated snippet can sound different on every step. The factory library holds 760MB of material, from acoustic beats and piano and percussion loops to synths, vocals and FX.

Bass and beat

The Bass tab is a classic mono line in the TB-303 and SH-101 mould, with saw or pulse oscillator, resonance, decay and cutoff modulation. The drum module has over 1,000 sampled kicks, snares and open and closed hats across 15 kits, with mix-and-match between kits. Both are deliberately simple, and that's the point: sample, bass and beat is the minimum needed to get an idea down.

Effects and arranger

The effect sequencer drops colour into specific steps rather than over the whole loop, and the arranger strings patterns together into longer sections.

The sound

Egoist is great for chopped soul and funk grooves, lo-fi and house sketches, and acid-tinged loops with that 303-style bass under a sliced sample.
