Sugar Bytes - Cyclop

Cyclop is Sugar Bytes' monophonic bass synthesiser, for producers in dubstep, drum and bass, electro and bass-heavy electronic music who want raw, moving low end. It's built around two powerful oscillators, the famous Wobble knob and an effect sequencer, and it's been championed by artists from Skrillex to Modeselektor.

The oscillators

Each of the two sound generators has six modes, covering spectral, digital and fat analogue-style tones, plus the Sample Transformer, which uses your own samples as a wavetable, and the Phase Stressor. The filter section offers ten types per side, including a vowel mode. Signal flow is free, so you can route things in ways a standard subtractive synth wouldn't allow.

The Wobble knob

Rhythm is Cyclop's speciality. The Wobble Generator modulates synth and filter with tempo-synced waveforms, controlled from one central knob, which is the quickest route to classic wobble basslines. Add the envelope, a nine-waveform LFO, a 16-step sequencer and the Sound knob, and there are up to five modulators reaching 16 targets.

The FX sequencer

The effects mix ideas from Effectrix and Turnado. Four sequencer lanes each hold a different group of effects, played from the FX knob or sequenced, so stutters and rhythmic effects sit right inside the patch.

The sound

Cyclop is aggressive and digital at heart: growls, wobbles, reese-style movement and bright, edgy basses that cut through on big systems. It's monophonic and bass-focused, so it's not the synth for pads or chords. Over 600 presets from artists including SiriusMo and the Sugar Bytes crew give a fast start. Its Wobble generator also appears in the WOW2 filter, if you want that movement on other sounds.
