FabFilter Twin 3 Review: Clean VA Synth, Now With MPE
Share
FabFilter's Synth Comes Out of the Shadows
Everyone knows FabFilter for Pro-Q and Pro-C. Far fewer people know the company makes a synth, and that's a shame, because Twin 3 is one of the cleanest-sounding virtual analogue instruments around. Its modulation workflow is about as quick as it gets, which won't surprise anyone who's dragged a band around in Pro-Q.
The October 2026 update to version 3.10 added full MPE support and over 200 new presets, so it's a good moment to take another look.
What It Is
Twin 3 is a virtual analogue subtractive synth. No wavetables, no sampling, no FM engine: oscillators into filters, shaped by envelopes and LFOs, with effects at the end. FabFilter's angle is doing that classic recipe very well, with a modern interface on top. It runs as a plugin in VST, VST3, CLAP, AU and AAX.

The Sound and the Architecture
There are four oscillators, each with analogue-style drift, pulse width modulation, hard sync and phase sync, plus ring modulation between pairs. Polyphony goes up to 64 voices, and a Per Oscillator mode sends each new note to a different oscillator, which is great for patches that change character as you play a chord. Four filters follow, including EQ-style bell, shelf and notch types and a gentle 6dB slope, with big Cutoff and Peak offset knobs that move all of them at once.
The sound is rich, warm and punchy, and Sound On Sound's review noted virtually no audible aliasing. A High Quality mode adds 4x oversampling for when you're bouncing. Basses are tight and solid with clicky attacks, pads are smooth, and leads cut through without getting harsh. It sits in a mix more politely than a lot of VA synths: it's clean rather than gritty, so if you want dirt, you reach for the Drive.
What It's Good At
Modulation. You drag a source onto any knob, set the depth on the knob itself, and watch the modulation move in real time. Sources include XLFOs, envelope generators, envelope followers with a transient mode, MIDI sources and up to six XY controllers or sliders, with up to 100 modulation slots. It's fast, visual and makes complex patches feel easy to build.
The effects section has six modules: reverb, delay, chorus, phaser, drive and compressor, and every parameter is a modulation target. The chorus and phaser are rich and the compressor is punchy, so a lot of patches sound finished straight away. There's an arpeggiator with host sync, groove and latch, a proper preset browser with tags and search, and now full MPE and Note Expression support from version 3.10. The Drums folder is worth a look too, with some properly good synthesised kicks and hats.

Where It Falls Short
It's strictly virtual analogue. If you want wavetables, FM or sample playback for modern bass design, Twin 3 can't do it, and a wavetable synth will serve you better. The oscillators can't be used as modulation sources either, which limits some of the more experimental tricks.
The flexibility of the modulation system can make other people's presets hard to read. Sound On Sound's reviewer admitted struggling at times to work out why a preset was doing what it did. There's also no internal clip indicator, so a heavy chord through a loud preset can distort without the plugin telling you. Keep an eye on your channel meter.
Long-Term Support
It's worth noting how well FabFilter looks after its products. Twin 3 came out in 2023, and the 3.10 update in October 2026 added MPE and new presets as a free update for existing owners. Old Twin 1 and 2 presets load in Twin 3 too, so nothing you built before gets left behind.
Who It's For
House, trance, techno, pop and anyone who wants a clean, reliable VA synth for basses, leads, pads and plucks. It's particularly good for people who like to program their own sounds, because the modulation workflow rewards tinkering. If you already use Pro-Q or Pro-L, the interface will feel instantly familiar. If your thing is heavy wavetable bass for dubstep, look elsewhere.
