Audiomodern - Gatelab 2

Gatelab 2 is Audiomodern's gate sequencer and volume modulation effect plugin for Mac and Windows, chopping any sound into evolving rhythmic patterns with smart randomisation, for producers who want movement in pads, chords and loops without drawing automation.

Gate or flow

At heart it's a step gate: a pattern opens and closes the signal in time with your host. The switch between Gate and Flow styles changes the character, from hard, choppy cuts to smoother volume shaping that pumps rather than stutters. Density controls set how many steps fire, and several randomisation modes generate new patterns when you run out of ideas. Version 2 is a full rebuild with new randomisation algorithms, a new filter section, better preset management and improved performance.

How it sounds in a track

Put it on a sustained pad and it turns a static chord into a trance-gate or a broken, syncopated rhythm, depending on density. On a vocal or a held synth note it's good for rhythmic interest in breakdowns, and the filter lets the gated part sit back rather than poking out. Flow mode with low density gives a gentle sidechain-style pulse, while Gate mode with randomisation pushed up gets busy quickly, so ride the density if you want it to breathe.

MIDI output

Gatelab can also send MIDI, so the same patterns can drive or randomise parameters in other plugins. Logic users get a dedicated MIDI FX version as well.

Who it's for

Electronic producers who use trance gates and rhythmic volume effects, and anyone tired of drawing the same automation curves. It does one job and does it well, and at this price there isn't much to argue with.
