Riffer 4 is Audiomodern's MIDI riff generator plugin for Mac and Windows, rebuilt around five generation engines for melodies, hooks, basslines, arpeggios and sequences, for producers who want a usable musical idea from a blank bar in seconds. Released in October 2026, it's the fourth version of a plugin that's been around for a decade.

Five engines instead of one randomiser

Earlier versions of Riffer had a single generator. Riffer 4 splits the job across five engines, each tuned for a different kind of part: hypnotic sequences, hooks, guitar-style patterns, animated arpeggios and basslines with some weight. You pick a key and scale, choose an engine, generate, and then shape the result with controls for note range, density, timing and feel. Every note can be edited directly, and you can spin off variations of a riff you like rather than rolling the dice again from scratch.

How it sounds in a track

Because Riffer only outputs MIDI, the sound is whatever synth you point it at. On a plucky mono synth the sequence and arpeggio engines give you rolling, Berlin-school-ish lines almost immediately, and the bass engine produces parts that leave room for the kick rather than filling every sixteenth. The hook engine is where you'll do the most regenerating, as memorable melodies are harder to luck into, but the density and range controls help pull a busy idea back into something singable.

Into your DAW

Once a riff works, drag the MIDI out and carry on in your DAW. That's the intended workflow: Riffer is a starting point, not a full arranger.

Who it's for

Electronic producers, and anyone who writes better reacting to an idea than staring at a piano roll. If you already own an older Riffer, the five-engine split is the real reason to move up. If you want strict music-theory tools or chord progressions, this isn't that plugin.
