Audiomodern - Soundbox Kromium

Kromium is an Audiomodern Soundbox library of abstract, manipulated strings for Mac and Windows, built from cellos and violins pushed well outside normal playing, for horror, thriller and experimental scoring. It loads into Soundbox, Audiomodern's free MPE sampler.

Runs in Soundbox

Soundbox is the free engine and Kromium is the content. Presets can layer up to four sounds, each with its own effects and arpeggiator, and four modulation engines plus a vector pad let you morph between them. MPE controllers get polyphonic pitch bend, which suits these sounds well, since a slow bend on a strained cello note is half the effect. Buying Kromium also unlocks Soundbox's mapping and sample editors.

How it sounds

Bowed notes are stretched into long, strained tones that swell with tension. Plucks come out hollow and almost percussive. Scrapes, squeaks and whispering bow noise fill in the gaps, often dissonant but with plenty of harmonic detail. One Kromium texture sitting under a quiet scene can do more unsettling work than a full section playing clusters.

Who it's for

Composers working on horror, thrillers, dark documentaries and sound design who want strings that feel wrong in a controlled way. If you need lush, conventional section strings, this isn't the library.
