McDSP - 6020 Ultimate EQ HD

The McDSP 6020 Ultimate EQ is ten equalisers in one plug-in, built in the same swappable module format as the 6030 Ultimate Compressor. It's for engineers who like the idea of a rack full of EQ colours, from smooth tube-style curves to hard-edged solid-state boosts, without a rack full of plug-ins.

Ten EQs in one

Each of the ten modules is a McDSP design drawing on classic and modern equalisers from the last four decades, from everyday studio staples to harder-to-find boutique gear. Pick one from the module list and it swaps in instantly, so A/B-ing a British-style console EQ against a tube design on the same vocal takes a click.

The sound

This is a character EQ rather than a surgical one. The modules behave like the hardware styles they draw on, with their own curve shapes and analogue saturation modelling, so a few dB of high shelf can add air and a little glue at the same time. For precise notching or linear-phase work you'd still reach for something like FilterBank or a modern digital EQ, but for tone shaping on the way into a mix, the 6020 is quick and musical.

HD or Native?

HD adds AAX DSP, so it runs on Pro Tools HDX cards and Avid VENUE S6L live consoles as well as natively on your computer. If you don't have HDX hardware, 6020 Ultimate EQ Native does the same job for less.
