Six Distinct Tape Styles

The Tape Age control changes the condition of the selected tape, allowing you to move smoothly from a relatively fresh cassette to something worn, unstable and close to breaking down.

Authentic Wow, Flutter and Drift

Create the natural pitch movement associated with cassette decks using Tapewave’s dedicated wow and flutter section. Its modulation combines smooth cyclical movement with less predictable fluctuations, producing a result that feels more organic than conventional LFO-based tape effects.

The additional Drift control introduces further instability when you want more obvious pitch warble, movement and degraded tape character.

Tape Saturation and Analogue-Style Drive

Push sounds into Tapewave’s modelled saturation circuit to add harmonic warmth, thickness and soft analogue-style distortion. It works equally well for subtly rounding digital instruments or driving drums, synths, vocals and samples into more aggressive cassette saturation.

Up to 16x oversampling is available for smooth processing with reduced aliasing, while lower-quality operating modes can be selected when conserving CPU is more important.

Two Characterful Compression Modes

Tapewave includes two analogue-inspired compression modes for controlling dynamics or deliberately crushing transients. The more aggressive Loc Mode is inspired by the character of the classic Shure Level-Loc compressor.

Compression can be positioned before or after the tape processing, making it possible to change whether the tape responds to an already compressed signal or whether the final cassette sound is compressed afterwards.
