Cherry Audio - CA2600

CA2600 is Cherry Audio's emulation of the ARP 2600, a semi-modular duophonic synth for chunky basses, cutting leads, sound effects and processing external audio, aimed at anyone who wants hands-on patching without a wall of modules.

The architecture

Everything sits on one panel, as on the original: the oscillators with their slightly quirky waveforms, the filter, envelopes, the external audio input and preamp. The patching is semi-normalled, so it makes a sound straight away and you add cables to reroute things rather than building every connection from scratch. Cherry Audio has added a 12 or 24dB filter option, MIDI sync and built-in effects including spring and plate reverbs and delay.

The sound

Thick and characterful. Basses have real weight, leads cut through easily and the ring-mod and noise sources make it a natural for bleeps, zaps and other sci-fi effects. The external input is a bonus, since you can run drums or vocals through the filter and envelopes. Duophonic means it isn't a pad machine, but for monosynth duties and sound design it's a lot of instrument for the money.
