CR-78 is Cherry Audio's emulation of the Roland CompuRhythm CR-78 of 1978, the first programmable microprocessor-controlled drum machine, for warm, ticking analogue beats in synthpop, new wave, lo-fi and electronic music.
How it works
All 34 original preset rhythms and their variations and fills are here, and two can be combined with a shift-click. The original's awkward programming has been replaced with familiar X0X-style 16 or 24-step editing, swing and a song mode of up to 99 patterns. The sounds are modelled rather than sampled, and the Voice Edit panel lets you tweak them gently or push them a long way from the originals.
The sound
Soft, round and charming: those little congas, rimshots and the famous metallic beat. It's the sound behind countless early-80s records. The mixer adds overdrive, flanger, delay and gated reverb with a one-button send per sound, plus a characterful compressor and graphic EQ. Drag patterns out as MIDI, or use the multi-out version to process each sound separately in your DAW.
