Crumar DS-2 is Cherry Audio's recreation of the 1978 Crumar DS-2, an early hybrid synth pairing a monosynth with a polyphonic section, for distinctive Italian leads, basses and string-style poly parts. It was made in collaboration with Crumar Instruments.
The architecture
DS stood for Digital Synthesizer: two digitally controlled oscillators with analogue filters, envelopes and amps. The original combined a monophonic synth section with a 44-note paraphonic companion. Cherry Audio makes the poly section fully polyphonic up to 32 notes, gives the synth section up to 16 voices, adds sync, a third LFO, looping envelopes, 12 and 24dB filter options and split or layered playing.
The sound
Bright and stable, with a slightly digital edge from the DCOs and warmth from the analogue filter. Layering the synth and poly sections gives it a big, full sound, and the stair-stepped sine wave on oscillator 2 adds character. Arpeggiators, aftertouch control and three effects chains complete it. Over 300 presets.
