Cherry Audio - Rackmode Signal Processors

Rackmode Signal Processors is Cherry Audio's collection of seven effects and a vocoder instrument recreating the rack-mounted Moog Signal Processor line of the 1970s and 80s, for producers who want vintage vocoding, phasing and ring modulation with real analogue character.

What's in the rack

The set covers the whole line: the 16-channel Vocoder (in instrument and effect versions), the 12-stage Phaser, Ring Modulator, String Filter, Frequency Shifter, Graphic EQ and Parametric EQ. The vocoder and frequency shifter were designed by Harald Bode, and the String Filter came from Moog's custom engineering group. Mark Barton (MRB) modelled them from the original hardware. Cherry Audio has added presets, syncable LFOs and stereo processing, which the originals mostly lacked.

The sound

The vocoder is the headline, warm and intelligible, with that classic robotic sheen heard on records by artists from Wendy Carlos to Tangerine Dream. The phaser is lush and deep, the ring modulator and frequency shifter are great for metallic, inharmonic textures, and the String Filter is a neat way to give string synths and pads a fixed-formant vintage tone. The EQs are more workmanlike, but with this many characterful boxes in one bundle, that's no hardship.
