Cherry Audio - Sines

Sines is an original Cherry Audio polysynth built on four sine-wave oscillators and a lot of waveshaping, for bright FM plucks, glassy bells, evolving pads and gnarly digital basses in electronic, ambient and modern pop production.

The architecture

Everything comes in fours: four oscillators, four LFOs with 14 shapes and four envelopes. Each oscillator starts as a pure sine and gets bent into shape with feedback, phase, width, shape, wavefold and drive controls, plus a sub and a super oscillator an octave either side. Phase modulation and ratio controls turn the four oscillators into a four-operator FM engine, so Sines can work subtractively, additively or as an FM synth. After that comes Cherry Audio's most extensive multimode filter, an arpeggiator, a four-slot mod matrix, drift, an eight-band graphic EQ and a selection of Cherry's effects.

The sound

Clean and precise when you want it, and properly aggressive once the wavefolder and drive come in. FM bells and plucks are crisp and sit well in a mix, and the waveshaping gives you a lot of tone without stacking oscillators. The interface lights up with mini oscilloscopes, which helps you see what the waveshaping is doing. It's deeper than most Cherry synths, so expect to spend time with it, but the 700-plus presets are a good way in.
