Wurlybird 140B is Cherry Audio's virtual Wurlitzer 140B, the early-60s electric piano many regard as the best of the Wurly family, for soulful keys in pop, rock, soul, lo-fi and indie production.

How it works

This is Cherry's first sample-based instrument. Mike Martin deep-sampled a professionally restored 140B, capturing every key and reed, and Cherry added subtle randomisation of key release and pedal noises so repeated notes don't sound robotic. The original preamp is modelled, along with the vibrato (really a tremolo) and even adjustable background hum.

The sound

That reedy, slightly barking Wurly tone that breaks up nicely when you dig in. Soft playing is sweet and bell-like, harder playing growls. Stompbox-style effects include tube overdrive, chorus, rotator, delay, reverb, a 70s phaser and a lo-fi effect with vinyl and noise. It does one instrument and does it very well. 50 presets from James Terris.
