Relab - LX480 Essentials

LX480 Essentials is the streamlined version of Relab's 480L recreation, for producers and mixers who want the classic 480 sound quickly and without a deep editing panel. It uses the same sample-accurate algorithms as the full LX480 Dual-Engine Reverb V4, trimmed to four of the most famous sounds.

The four algorithms

• Fat Plate: what the 480 is famous for. Bright, shiny plates that sit on vocals and snares without cluttering the mix.
• Medium Hall: a smooth, even hall that gives a set of tracks the sense of sharing one space.
• Small Ambience: short, close reflections that blend into the direct sound, felt more than heard. Great for dry drums.
• Large Wood Room: a coloured, natural room that adds space without drawing attention to itself.

Where it came from

Relab modelled the 480 from a "golden unit" that came out of the Hit Factory studios in New York. The original cost around $20,000 in 1986, and good units still fetch thousands. Essentials puts that sound in your DAW for the price of a sample pack, with signature presets from mixers including Richard Furch and Joe Carrell.

The sound

It's the 480 character in its most usable form: glossy plates, a rich hall and a room that glues things together. You don't get the second engine, Random Hall HD, chorus or delays, so if you want to shape the tail in detail, step up to the Dual-Engine version. As a quick reverb you reach for every session, it's very good value. It's also part of the Essentials Reverb Bundle.
