Sugar Bytes - WOW2

WOW2 is Sugar Bytes' creative filter plugin, for producers in bass music, techno and electronic genres who want filters that move: wobbles, vowel sweeps and rhythmic cuts. It packs 21 filter types, four modulation sources and a distortion unit into one compact panel.

The filters

The 21 filters are non-aliasing and cover everything from a singing comb to a steep 8-pole low-pass, a dirty diode MS type and a gnarly 303-style filter. Every one of them also runs in Vowel mode, with nine human vocal sounds to sweep between. Try the 8-pole low-pass on a bass for a bubbly, smacky tone. Dynamic oversampling keeps the top end clean even at extreme settings.

Modulation

There are four sources: an envelope follower with frequency detection, an LFO with 13 waveforms, a 16-step sequencer, and the Wobble Generator lifted from Cyclop. The Wobble knob changes LFO shape and tempo-synced rate together, and it can be modulated itself, which is where the dubstep-style movement comes from. Right-click any parameter to assign a source.

Distortion

Seven algorithms sit before or after the filter: three overdrives, including the tube-inspired Parabolic, and four digital functions such as Bit Crusher, Sine and Diabolic. Output level stays stable as you push it, so you aren't constantly riding gain.

The sound

WOW2 does one job and does it well. Basses get rubbery and vocal, drums get rhythmic filter movement, and synth lines get talking vowel sweeps. There's no delay or reverb here, so it pairs naturally with a space effect after it. If you want filters alongside a full set of rhythmic effects, Effectrix 2 covers more ground.
