Sugar Bytes - Factory

Factory is Sugar Bytes' polyphonic modular-style synth, for sound designers and producers in electronic, ambient and experimental music who want complex, organic sounds without patching cables. It combines unusual synthesis methods, a flexible mod matrix and four background sequencers, and can morph between two complete states of a patch.

The oscillators

The two oscillators each have ten modes: non-aliasing VA with sync, fractal, wavetable, waveguide and FM among them. Cyclop's Transformer has been made polyphonic too, so you can feed your own samples to the oscillators. A sub-oscillator with ring modulation and a noise generator with five colours round out the sources.

Modulation and morphing

Looping envelopes, one-shot LFOs, bipolar sequencers and sample-and-hold feed an 8x10 matrix with 36 targets, all with bipolar amounts. The Morph fader blends between two states of the patch, so one fader can move a sound from a simple pluck to something completely different.

Sequencers and arpeggiator

Four sequencers run in the background. They can trigger envelopes, LFOs or the arpeggiator, and create shifting triplet rhythms and sweeps. The arpeggiator adds pitch quantising to scales and slight tonal drift, which keeps generative patches sounding natural.

The sound

Factory suits evolving pads, living arpeggios, metallic plucks and textures for film and games, with plenty of grit when you want it. It's deep and rewards time spent, so it's not the quickest synth for a straight bass or lead. For bass duties, Cyclop is the focused choice; for cinematic FM textures, see Aparillo.
