Sugar Bytes - Looperator

Looperator is Sugar Bytes' loop slicer and effect sequencer, for producers and DJs who want to chop a drum loop or vocal into something new in a couple of minutes. It combines a 16-step slicer, which re-orders your audio, with lanes of effects placed per step, so rolls, stutters, reverses and filter moves land exactly in time.

Slicer and effects

The slicer cuts incoming audio into 16 steps and lets you rearrange, repeat and reverse them. Alongside it sit effect lanes covering filters, reverb, a looper with reverse mode, vinyl manipulation, time stretch and a talkbox filter. Each effect has five parameters you can set per step, and each can be steered by one of 20 adjustable modulation shapes. Left and right channels can be controlled independently for stereo movement.

Live and studio

Looperator follows your DAW's transport or can be triggered from MIDI notes, and in a DJ setup it syncs to your DJ software. Whole effect sequences can be assigned to MIDI notes, so you can fire patterns from a keyboard or pad controller. Unlimited undo and redo makes experimenting safe, and the smart random function builds sequences that tend to sound balanced rather than chaotic.

The sound

Looperator is at its best on drums, breaks and vocal hooks, where its rolls and stutter edits save a lot of fiddly DAW editing. On long sustained pads there's less for the slicer to work with.
