Sugar Bytes - Turnado

Turnado is Sugar Bytes' real-time multi-effect plugin, for DJs, live performers and producers who want to twist a track with one hand while it plays. Eight knobs each fire up an effect, and turning the knob both brings it in and pushes it further. It's been a favourite in live electronic sets for years, and is light enough on CPU to run many instances at once.

Eight knobs, 24 effects

Each of the eight slots can hold any of 24 effects, from classics like delay, reverb, filter and amplifier through to modulation, transformation, loop and DJ effects. At rest a knob does nothing; turn it and the effect fades in and intensifies along a curve you can shape in expert mode. You can stack several at once, and the dynamic signal flow lets you change the order they run in.

Dictator mode

Dictator is the trick that sets Turnado apart. One fader drives all eight knobs at once, each starting and stopping at points you define, so a single gesture can build a whole breakdown: filter closing, delay feeding back, a stutter creeping in. It's ideal for a MIDI controller fader, and everything is automatable and MIDI-learnable.

Modulation

Two LFOs and a step sequencer can move the knobs for you, so effects pulse in time with the track without you touching anything. NKS support maps the knobs straight to Komplete Kontrol and Maschine hardware.

The sound

Turnado excels at dramatic movement: builds, risers, glitched drops and transitions that sound performed rather than drawn in. It isn't the tool for careful mix polish, and the effects are designed to be heard. For precise, grid-placed effects choose Effectrix 2, and for slicing and re-ordering loops look at Looperator.
