Unique is Sugar Bytes' analogue-style synth, modelled on the classic keyboards of the golden age of analogue, for producers after fat basses, warm string and keys sounds and, above all, talking vowel tones. The Vowel Filter is the reason it exists, and it's still one of the best of its kind.

The oscillators

Two oscillators offer sawtooth, triple saw, pulse, triple FM and noise with a tonal filter, with a sub sine underneath. It's a simple, classic layout, voiced with input from musicians to cover basses, strings and keys with plenty of power.

The Vowel Filter

Alongside analogue-style high-pass, low-pass and band-pass filters and a comb filter, the Vowel Filter strings together two or four vowel formants and plays them back in different ways. Feed it a saw and it speaks, which makes it a natural for funk basses, robotic leads and vocal pads. Each of the five filters has five modulators.

Controllers and effects

A recordable XY pad and a sequencer bring dynamics, and any control can be assigned with a right-click. A duophonic arpeggiator and polyphonic auto-panning per oscillator add movement, and two chained multi-effect units finish the sound.

The sound

Unique is warm and assertive, with deep basses and vintage string and piano tones, but the vowel sounds are what you'll come back for. It's an older design with a straightforward interface, so don't expect wavetables or a huge mod matrix. For more modern sound design, look at Factory; for vowel filtering on any sound, WOW2.
